Uvalde, Texas
In 2022 we were treated to long continuing media coverage of the Uvalde Massacre. Suddenly a peaceful little town few people had heard of became world famous. Within the coverage, I think there are still a couple of comments to be made. Of course, I was not there, so my impressions could be influenced by the media’s incompetent coverage.
Although Uvalde is close to the Mexican border, I saw no indication that out-of-control illegal immigration had anything to do with the murders.
It appears that the police held back for a long time before going into the school, thus allowing the dying to continue, because it seemed to dangerous to enter. The word “cowardice” was heard.
When a man joins the military or a police force, he is taking on the risk that he may have to “make the ultimate sacrifice” at some point. Our society should do all possible to reduce this risk, but we cannot completely eliminate it. In a war, if leadership is good and we are not overmatched, it appears that an infantryman has about a ninety percent chance of surviving a year in combat. A policeman’s annual risk is less, but he is more likely to serve for decades. Typically the policeman’s arms are much superior to those of the enemy.
But an infantryman or a policeman has to live with the fact that his duty may at some point require him to face possible, or even probable, death. The odds are in his favor because it doesn’t happen frequently. The policeman or infantryman should know that when he signs up.
Yes, we all must die some day. But those who take on extra risk we call “heros”.
In Uvalde, I can’t see a good reason for holding back. Holding back meant that the scumbag had opportunity to kill more children, and that the wounded had more time to bleed to death.
Further, it does not seem too hard to find an assault plan to go to the rescue. Schoolrooms usually have windows down one side, opposite the door. Have a cop with an automatic weapon crawl up under each window. Take a sledgehammer and bash the door. While the turd is looking to the door, the cops below the windows stand up and blow him away. Quite likely the deserving scum is the only one killed.
As usual, the politicians and news commentators used this event as a pretext to demand that nobody, except “authorities”, be allowed to own guns.
It was reported that the siege ended after an unarmed off-duty border patrolman got a text reporting the ongoing siege while he was getting a haircut. He borrowed a rifle from the barber, and went to the rescue. If we had proper gun control, the barber would not have had a gun to lend.
In any such horrendous event, there are lessons to be learned, and to be ignored by those whose prejudices are threatened.
