Unsung Allies 1 : Poland
The United States in 2003 invaded Iraq. The media did not seem to want to mention some of our allies in our attempt to oppose Islamic terrorism.
Let me say a little about our staunch friends in one such ally, Poland.
In 1683, Muslims pushed into central Europe, hoping to conquer all of Europe and stamp out Christianity. Polish cavalry joined the defense at the battle of Vienna, stopping the invasion. Poland was an allay of the USA and civilization against the Muslim terrorists even before there was a USA.
In 1920 the Soviets under Joseph Stalin, noting that Europe was in a shambles after WWI, decided to invade to bring the blessings of communism to all the continent. The Russian cavalry, considered the finest in the world, was defeated by the Polish cavalry at the battle of Warsaw.
In 1939 the Nazis invaded Poland. The Polish cavalry made a valiant fight, but only succeeded in demonstrating that horses are not effective against panzer tanks. A number of Poles escaped to England and fought as volunteers until the end of WWII.
The Nazis established in Poland a camp they named “Auschwitz”, where they murdered myriads of Jews, Poles, and others.
At the end of WWI, the allies agreed to let the Soviets control Poland. In spite of this shameful betrayal, the Poles did not become foes of western values. “With friends like this, who needs enemies?”
In Iraq, Polish soldiers played a part, but were seldom mentioned by our media.
